John grew up all over the Rochester and Buffalo area, eventually settling in Henrietta for the latter part of his childhood. After a tour of duty in the United States Marine Corps, he returned to the Rochester environs and fell in love with carpentry. In addition to working on elite high-rise projects around the world (including a wonderfully memorable year in Hawaii in 1976), he channeled this passion into custom-building his own very first home in the town of Rush. After many years’ experience in carpentry and construction, he decided to expand his horizons by bringing his knowledge to bear in the role of realtor. A big believer in education, from the very beginning John felt it important to learn as much about the industry as possible and continued taking courses even after he received his license in order to broaden and diversify his real estate knowledge. While learning the real estate business he saw the need for a clearer explanation of the challenges involved in navigating the tricky processes of home building and home buying, and thus began writing the first drafts of the home buying manuals that True North provides its clients with today. After only eighteen months as an agent John’s success enabled him to open his own brokerage, where he gained a reputation for providing the utmost in ethical and comprehensive services to his clients. Later, capitalizing on his background and commitment to small business enterprises, he built a local construction firm from the ground up. Committed not only to practicing but also teaching ethical real estate practice, in 2006 he became a licensed real estate instructor for NY State and published three training manuals for real estate agents. He sits on the Realtor Bar and Professional Development Committees of the Greater Rochester Association of Realtors®, and continues to teach courses on buyer’s agency today as a licensed instructor. In order to fill a growing need for exclusive buyers’ agents in upstate NY, he established True North Realtors NY as an exclusive buyer’s agency in 2005. Then, in 2008, he decided to restructure the company to include other agents, all of whom are also committed to the ethic of consumer education and advocacy that lead them to becoming a part of an exclusive buyers’ agency.
This ethic of service extends to John’s involvement with the local community, where his roles have ranged from volunteer fireman to math and reading tutor to inner city 4th graders through the non-profit organization Project Urge. With Project Urge he has also been able to contribute his construction expertise through Jacob’s Ladder, an outreach program that renovates and restores non-profit facilities in the Greater Rochester area. As an active member of Crosswinds Community Church in Canandaigua, John has taught life seminars, gone on mission trips to Ecuador, and supervised building expansions for church facilities.
In his spare time, John loves playing golf and the drums (a lot of Jethro Tull, Moody Blues, The Rascals, and a little bit of Coltrane), traveling around the world, swimming in beautiful Canandaigua Lake, and riding his custom low-rider Screamin’ Eagle Harley Davidson Softtail. He and Mary, his best friend and lovely wife of twenty-five years, reside in Canandaigua.
